2007 Match Reports

Brentwood A, 13
Siegel, 10
May 6th, 2007 - Crockett Park

The Brumbies earned their seventh straight appearance to the State Championship by outlasting Siegel in double overtime. The game started Friday night, but was ended by foul weather with 2 minutes of regular time remaining. This caused a replay for Sunday to complete the final regulation time as well as any needed extra time.

The boys played well on Friday and tried to establish a pattern. However, Siegel's ill-disciplined play negated any form of fast ball with their repeated diving over, hands-in and off sides. In fact, the referee was having a hard time deciding which infringements were more costly and repeatedly warned, yellow carded and eventually binned their players. Consequently, the weather would decide this night's match with a nasty lightning storm that had the game called. Score 10-10.

Sunday the Brumbies met back at Crockett to play out the remaining time. Our game plan was simple, work phases and let Siegel's ill-discipline set up a penalty kick for the game winner. First overtime came to pass, worked phases, earned penalty. However, kick was missed. Second overtime, same thing, worked simple phases and Siegel was called for off-sides and diving over. This time Kurt Adams would not be denied with his kick in front of posts which he duely slotted for the game winner. 13-10.

South Championship
In the first match, Nashville’s top-seeded Brentwood Brumbies squared off against eighth seed Archbishop Rummel of New Orleans. Taken a bit off-guard by the bottom seed, Brentwood lost a close, physical match by a penalty. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Trojans took on Union from North Carolina. Utilizing a dynamic 10-12 duo and a fit, physical front eight, Atlanta was able to advance. Jesuit of New Orleans defeated Bentonville, Arkansas in a runaway, scoring six unanswered tries in the first half. Finally, Naples got past South Carolina to close out the first round.

On the second go-round Saturday afternoon, Rummel again pulled off the upset, dispatching Atlanta 21-19 in a fast-paced match characterized by ferocious rucks and tackles. Jesuit’s quick recycling and superb support running proved too much for Naples, setting up the final for Sunday. Union added to Brentwood’s sorrows on the day, and South Carolina defeated Bentonville to set up the 5th and 7th place matchups.

Sunday heralded the arrival of the South Louisiana summer, with temperatures nearing 90. Enjoying the milder morning climate, Union took 5th and Brentwood 7th. The third place match saw an absolutely surgical Trojan flyhalf keep Naples off-balance enough to get the win, despite some nifty ball-handling and near-misses from the Florida side. The championship match pitted Rummel against Jesuit for the fifth time this season (Jesuit would end up 4-1 in the series). Despite an aggressive opening surge by Rummel’s forwards, Jesuit was hitting on all cylinders. Taking advantage of every miscue and allowing only the slimmest of spaces for Rummel’s backs to try and exploit, Jesuit kept the pressure on and tightened the screws as the game wore on, allowing only one break in the defense on their way to a 26-7 win for the title.

New Orleans RFC came in for some high praise for their hosting of the tournament, especially Chris Beacher, for his supervision and hard work in preparing the fields and facilities, and tournament organizer Gary Giepert.

The Brumbies played their best game of the seaon so far in their last regular season game against Ravenwood. The boys came out fast and ran the pattern very well. Our back line ran strong lines and broke threw gaps throughout the game.

The B side also had their best game of the season in which they looked good at the breakdown and continually got the ball out wide. Zack L. was clinical with his passing and made several good decisions. The pack also ran well with Matt Wyatt scoring two impressive tries.

The Brumbies lost for the first time to a Middle TN team in a non-conference friendly against the Fighting Irish this past week. As the trend of this season, the boys came out firing in the first half and were dominating possession. The forwards were controlling the rucks and moving the ball nicely when they set up several phases where strong running prop David Carter made a nice pass to Greg Freeman who easily dotted down in the corner in the first seven minutes of play. Conversion missed, 5-0. The boys continued to dominate in the first half but could not convert progress into points as they were constantly in their opponents 22 with us even knocking on in the try zone two or three times. Spencer Buford was strong with his boot as was Taylor Williams who put in his best game at Fullback.

Brentwood looked to do more of the same in the second but the Irish would not allow it. They constantly spoiled any good ball and their hard charging number 8 put the boys on their back feet. Also, our set pieces fell apart and we constantly threw away our line-outs giving the other team possession. In fact, one bad throw on our own 5 meter line was intercepted and pushed in for a try. Conversion made 5-7. As the half wore on, Brentwood continued to throw away their lineouts and give away possession. Pattern of play fell apart and the Irish put in another try under the post with conversion made. 5-14. Both teams battled for field position and eventually the whistle blew with the boys in green earning the victory.

The boys looked good this weekend against the Murfreesboro side. We ran our patterns fairly well and the forwards set good platforms. However, there was a lot of balls on the deck and we need to do a better job of keeping possession. Good job of the backs getting it out to hands, need to work concentrate on running straighter lines. Overall, defense was solid.

Man of Match: Matt Reese - Played great defense, scored, didn't throw away his usual 50/50 balls and set the tone for the entire team.

Franklin, 15
Tennessean Write-up of the Game

The Brumbies jumped out to a 15-0 half time lead against Franklin and it looked like the route was on. Brentwood controlled a large amount of possession and their forwards were winning several phases with ball in hand. Also, the backs were shutting down Franklin's speedy 10 and let no advances past their gainline.

However, the second half was a different story and the boys lackadaisical approach saw them commit several dumb penalties which the opposition gladly turned into points. Franklin scored two tries and hit a PK to tie the game and it looked like an upset was in the making. However, Brentwood pulled together in the end and Junior Center, Wil Lipsey, touched down in the corner to take the lead. Bobby Jewell hit the conversion and the referee blew the whistle shortly thereafter giving the boys in blue the victory.

Good work by the boys in the first half as they put together their most complete game to date. However, it was a shame to see us lose our composure in the second after playing so well. It seemed like every whistle from the referee was making us go back 10. We need to work on cutting down the dumb stuff. More work ahead as we near the play-offs.

Raventwood A, 36

Our seconds got a good run against a solid A side from Ravenwood. We definitely hung with them in the first only giving up 12 points. The positive aspect of this game was that our pack gave them a real go and their first three tries came from the same player (their number 10). So, it was evident that our back line's in-experience was the cause for giving up most of the points. Also, our counter-kicking was poor which was another example if inexperience. All in all, the B side played tough and there were a lot of positives despite the score.

Man of the Match: Evan McClure - Worked hard on defense and ran forward!

Thursday, March 15, 2007 - Crockett Park

The Brumbie's A side faced a lively and physical Fighting Irish Thursday night. It was going to be interesting to see how the boys would respond to the Nash Bash weekend after suffering three straight losses. From the get go, it was apparent that this was going to be a heated affair as both teams repelled many near scoring attempts. Brentwood had a chance early in the game for an easy pk, but the attempt sailed wide. As the game wore on, the Fighting Irish over-excitement seemed to be to their detriment as they were constantly called by infractions by the referee. The boys kept their cool and Spencer Buford's booming kicks continually got them out of trouble. Late in the game, the Brumbies pushed forward with several phases and it was John Lundquist who dotted down in the corner. Conversion missed. 5-0.

The Irish kept pushing forward and spent the last ten minutes in the Brumbies 10 meter line, but couldn't push over. Finally, the whistle blew and Brentwood squeeked out a victory. Not pretty, but it overall it was a positive result and a definite character builder. We are starting to mature as a side and play smart rugby.

Nash Bash 2007, U19 Tournament
Game 1, Saturday - 9am
Brentwood A, 7
Penn, 26

The first game pitted the Brumbies against National Finalist, Penn from IN who had several U17 Eagles on their roster. Overall, the boys played a decent game and tried to keep possession. However, our inexperience was obvious as we continued to give our opposition the ball as well as the fact that we couldn't figure how to hit touch. Penn's first score came from their 8 and 9 going weak off the scrum which we carelessly watched happen. The next couple of scores came from poor back defense which was also an example of inexperience as this was the first A side game for several players. The pack finally earned a score as they were working several phases and David Carter picked up off a penalty and dotted down with good heads up play.

Game 2, Saturday - 5pm
Brentwood A, 0
Westerville Worms, 50
This was a beat down. We basically lost in every aspect of the game. The Worms must have held a grudge from us whipping their ass last year at the Bash since they were constantly reprimanded by the referee for taunting, foul play, and general ill discipline. All that can be said is that the boys generally kept their heads and tried to play good rugby.

Game 3, Sunday - 10 am
Brentwood A, 3
Carmel, 15
Brentwood was looking to rebound from Saturday and get a win after two tough losses, but it was not to be. Overall, this is a game we definitely should have won. We started out the first 20 minutes establishing the pace and setting good platforms for the pack. We dominated go forward and we were in their 20 for large parts of the first half, but only came away with a penalty kick. Again, inexperience would rear its ugly head as another team picked up weak off the scrum and ran in their first try. The last try also came from dumb play as we tried to run the ball out from our own 22 which in turn went for a turnover and then and easy 5 for Carmel.

Our opposition wasn't threatening or dominating, they just did the basics well while we continued to beat ourselves with dumb penalties, lazy passes, and no intensity at the breakdown. In the end, the boys proved that they were much more organized and ran some semblence of phases. With some hard work and more game experience, this team could really come together and make things happen.

Friday, Feb 23, 2007 - Crockett Park

The Brentwood Brumbies A side hit the field against Siegel from Murfreesboro on Friday in their first game since last year's National Championship run. It was apparent from the whistle that Siegel was not going to be initimidated by our previous year's accomplishments. Their pack was big and intent on going forward as well as their crafty #9 was enterprising on getting the ball wide and directing his team's pattern. However, they were unable to turn any of their success into points as Brentwood's defense held steady. Finally, Junior wing, Trey Harris dotted down in the corner after spreading the ball wide. Then, it was Matt Reese at #8 who scored another try before the half that was credited to strong work by the forwards. Conversions missed. 10-0, Brentwood.

After the break, the Brumbies made some adjustments in the forwards and started to establish some semblance of pattern. Eventually, Spencer Buford was able to get the ball wide and outside center, Tommy Parrish bulled over for the score. Finally, on the prettiest try of the day, the pack worked many phases which sprung hard charging prop, David Carter into space who easily off-loaded to wing, Trey Harris who scored his second try of the day. Conversions missed, 20-0.

All in all it was a good first game of the season. Our pattern is extremely rusty and we're returning ZERO starters from last year's team, so we are all learning how to play together.

The Brentwood Brumbies B side kicked off the Spring 2007 campaign with a 49-0 win over Ravenwood B. Twenty six players in all took the field for our first game. Consequently, fifteen of them had never played in a game before but the boys mixed it up well. Senior scrum half, Greg Freeman, managed the team effectively while the Forward pack ran hard with ball in hand. Ravenwood was
definitely game, but players like Matt Reese and Wells Fowler set the pace with
their line breaking runs. The Backs also played well with new fly half, Trey
Harris getting the ball wide and breaking runs.
